There is no doubt that the war in Gaza occupies most of the attention of the international organizations, the needs there are dire and immediate.
However, in a broader perspective, the situation in the West Bank must be examined in depth, since this region is characterized by much greater diversity, challenges that are both broad and deep, and has the potential to have a negative impact on many other arenas.
It can be said that the West Bank is divided into a large number of areas, starting with the difference between the Palestinian cities themselves from one to the other, the differences between the urban area and the rural area, the refugee camps, and ending with the seam area. This, of course, goes beyond the challenges created by friction between the populations.
Also in this region there are a large number of actors starting from the Palestinian Authority, through Israel and ending with the United Nations, the Red Cross and other factors.
This is not the place to expand on the very difficult situation of the Palestinian Authority, both in the economic, administrative and trust aspects of the Palestinian public. At the same time, there is a deep economic challenge since the economic situation of the Palestinians (beyond the economic crisis of the Palestinian Authority) has also worsened in light of the closure of the crossings with Israel and a dramatic reduction in employment opportunities in Israel. As always, political aspects do not contribute to the matter and add a significant layer of challenges.
Today, the West Bank is required to look at the aid options in three key time dimensions: the immediate, how can aid be provided in a way that will help the largest amount of the population and prevent it from reaching a difficult humanitarian situation, in the medium term, how can Nitzan help in order to rehabilitate productive and contributing parts, and in the long term to continue to build infrastructure and capabilities.
At ICS we helped our partners find solutions to the problems that arose in the last months of the war in Gaza, but beyond that we acted so that our partners would see the big picture and make their decisions from a broad perspective and understanding of the challenges. This is in full coordination with all the players.
